Let the Illawarra ITeC help put that business idea into practice
and help you develop the necessary skills essential for business
survival in the new millennium! Together with NEIS you can turn
your idea into a reality.
What businesses are eligible?
To receive NEIS assistance, your business must be:
• New and not yet operating on a commercial basis
• Located in the area indicated in your business plan
• Legal and reputable
Who is eligible?
Anyone who is:
• Aged 18 years old and who will not reach pension age
while on NEIS allowance
• In receipt of a part or full Centrelink pension or benefit
• Unemployed and registered with Centrelink for full-time
work
• Available to work full-time in the business while receiving
NEIS Allowance (ie: more than 20 hours per-week)
• Not an undischarged bankrupt
What does NEIS provide?
• Nationally recognised and accredited training in Small
Business Management
• Advice and support from a mentor for the first 12 months
• NEIS Allowance for 12 months
• Access to a network of established and successful small
businesses.
What financial help is available?
Through NEIS you may receive:
• Income support while undertaking NEIS small business
training
• NEIS Allowance equivalent to the adult single rate of
Newstart Allowance for up to 52 weeks
• Rental assistance for a period of up to 26 weeks (if eligible)
Are other grants available?
NEIS WILL NOT PROVIDE YOU WITH START UP FUNDS IN THE FORM OF LOANS
AND GRANTS.
The development of a business plan, during NEIS training, will
assist you when you need to approach banks or credit unions if
finance is required.
Where do I go from here?
Take these steps:
• Ring ITeC for an Application Form
• Complete and return Application Form to ITeC within the
allotted time
• Small Business Training ( 7 weeks)
• Business Plan Submission
• Subject to approval by DEWR, you will receive the NEIS
Allowance for twelve months, along with mentoring and business
advice.
Facts about NEIS and the Illawarra ITeC
• Since 1985 The Commonwealth Government, through NEIS,
has assisted more than 85,000 unemployed people set up new small
businesses.
• The Illawarra ITeC has been a NEIS Managing Agent since
1989 and has assisted in the establishment of more than 1,300
businesses throughout the area.
